Choose Freedom
We are all born into a body. That is the very nature of our experience of being human. What happens after that sets us up for our lived experience, and most of us live that experience as “brain taxis.” We live our experience in cognition—in our thoughts—and thought processing is not the felt experience or the embodied experience.
When we begin a practice of coming into our body—and it is a practice—we begin a process of knowing and understanding ourselves through and as more than just our thoughts. We begin to feel into our senses—feelings & emotions, “muscles better and nerves more,” as e.e. cummings put it. We begin to feel into our muscles, tendons, fascia, tendons. We begin to feel ourselves as an integrated system that allows us to feel our sensations and emotions as we move through our days. We begin to understand the integration of the subtle body, which calls us to recognize ourselves and all others as connected, not separate. We may begin to feel integration of the chakras. We begin to understand the mechanics of a feeling and how we respond. We are able to ground, center, and allow for the reality of what is in this moment while also invoking our known self to set us on our higher path.
There are many reasons so many of us become disembodied throughout the course of our lives—culture, values, hardships, trauma, and shame are some examples of our body’s intuition and wisdom when we must develop strategies to cope through difficult times. We may leave our bodies until we feel good enough. We may leave our bodies to avoid suffering. These are protective adaptations. But when this no longer serves, we have an invitation to come back to the knowing of ourselves so that we can begin to integrate pleasure and joy while also understanding ourselves as multi-dimensional and life as inclusive of all experiences.
